It was a Friday night. My family had made the rare decision to watch a movie–a process that takes some hassle. We haven’t owned a T.V. for years, so when we do choose to watch something, we drag the computer from the office upstairs to the dining room table.

Movie night is a big deal. Everyone sits very hushed and still. We focus on every detail of what we’re seeing.

This particular night followed the same routine as always. We were absorbed in the movie, startled when it ended on a cliff hanger.

That was okay. We had the second movie, so on Saturday night, we went through the set-up hassle again so that we could finish the story.

The second movie was even better. The plot was more intense, the camera work had improved, and all of us barely breathed until we reached the end.

And then . . . wham! Another cliff hanger!

This time it was not okay. We didn’t have the next film.

My brother rushed to the computer and did a rapid google search for the film company. We found a page for the first movie and the second one, but lo and behold, there was no third movie. And given that seven years had already passed since the last movie was made, it didn’t look like there would be a follow-up.

There was a riot in our house that night. I’m still sad as I sit here and consider that final scene in the movie. Did the good guy make it out of jail? And was that character that we all thought dead actually alive?

It’s a real problem. You get emotionally attached to characters and involved in the story–and then you’re left hanging. Movie series do it and so do book series.

To get to an even finer point, with this issue of abrupt series drops, how do you know that my series is going to carry all the way to the end? A Choice of Love is only book 1, after all.

In all honesty, I can’t make promises. Life happens, and while I think I can foresee the next few years, things could happen to derail my plans. However, I can assure you that I already have all but the last book in the series written and they’re just sitting on my computer, waiting for their launch day to come.

Plus, I’m working on getting Book 2 in the series edited and it should be ready for release next February, Lord willing. That’s as close to a promise as I can get.
